Heavy Metal OTD meets Hitwood

Interview with Antonio - Mind behind Hitwood

The Hitwood project was founded in 2007, it's based in the North of Italy and is intended as a solo project of Antonio Boccellari.

Hitwood is a member of the UnderWorld Map

Kostas :: What type of band are you?
Antonio :: Hitwood is an one-man band but I like to see it like a “collaborative project” that involves guest musicians.

Kostas :: Tell us the brief history of your band.
Antonio :: I found this project in 2007 with thousand melodies that I’ve dreamed in the past but only in 2016 I finally released the final product “When Youngness..Flies Away..”, instrumental album. This time helped me reach a great songwriting experience so I become more productive and by now I’ve released 2 more EP; “As A Season Bloom”, instrumental, poetic and artistic..more post-rock oriented; then I’ve released what I call the “new begin” of the project, the “Detriti” EP. First album 100% Melodic Death Metal oriented with guest vocalist that helped me to give a voice to my songs.

Kostas :: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Antonio :: I’m inspired principally by dreams and nature; these elements help me to find the right balance to the rage of the metal and the harmony of the melodies. My musical influences comes from the Sweden Metal scene, first of all In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, then all the other Melodic Death Metal acts that everyone of you knows inspired me in something..other bands from different genres were Alcest, Agalloch, Drudkh, Harakiri for The Sky, Paradise Lost; I found these bands “poetic” and I think that you could hear the influence in my music.

Kostas :: What are your dreams and goals?
Antonio :: Become an act like Avantasia or Ayreon, a project that involves different musicians for the same cause.

Kostas :: Who writes the songs, what are they about?
Antonio :: As one man band project, I’m the composer of everything but for now the vocalists who partecipate to this project helped me in transpose my lyrics to fit the song. What I describe with my music is the story behind this old man called Hitwood that contacted me through dreams. It’s like an adventure where I experience the loss, desperation, difficulties of his life and all of these scenes that I see in dreams had melodies in background that I try to remember when I wake up the morning after and I try to build the songs around that.

Kostas :: How do you promote your band and shows?
Antonio :: We are a studio project so, for now, I discard the “live” prospective. I’m not really into promoting, who discover the project Hitwood is because is in search of something different and before or after will reach us.

Kostas :: What do you think about downloading music online?
Antonio :: I’m from the new era of digital consumer and I ever think that this is the best way to discover new bands because, with the saturation of bands nowadays will be impossible to reach every band by purchasing the physical album. Services like Bandcamp is completely supported by mine. Nothing better than listen for free to the song then donating something to support the artist and download the songs. Anyway I’m also a great collector of physical albums; I don’t listen them anymore because I prefer the comfort of portable music but I bought the albums because I want to collect them and have them physically in my studio.

Kostas :: What's your outlook on the record industry today?
Antonio :: I think the record labels are intended to disappear. In these last years every artist could support himself, and if the project will grow in the future, more and more artists found their own record label. Talking to myself I don’t want no one that tell me what I have to do with my music and my artistic visions. I prefer to maintain my musical niche but don’t be influenced by someone, this is also the reason why Hitwood is a one man band instead of a normal band.

Kostas :: What's your claim to fame?
Antonio :: I don’t have any claim, I take what comes…

Kostas :: What inspires you to do what you do?
Antonio :: Dreams, nature, and this world that runs too fast in these days.

Kostas :: What advice would you give to fellow bands?
Antonio :: Do what you have inside and don’t accept to become what the others want from you.

Kostas :: How does music affect you and the world around you?
Antonio :: I think that music is a big part of everyone existence. We constantly hear music, in car, at home, in the clubs, in the pubs, at work, at the market. Music is the only thing that will ever be on your side.

Kostas :: What's new in the recording of your music?
Antonio :: I constantly update my gear to reach a great sound without the need to record in a professional studio. I want the comfort to record all in my studio in every moment I want. For now I’m working to record a song then release it. I like this way to release music, song by song then when the story comes to an end included them in an EP then release it. In this way the project stay alive in the online presence . I plan to release the “Marea” EP in the first half of 2018, for now I’ve released two songs out of 6, in the next weeks we will release something more.

Kostas :: What are the biggest obstacles for bands?
Antonio :: The saturation of bands. Too competition and zero chances to emerge. But I don’t mind..as I have said, the time that you could discover Hitwood will come if you search for that typical sound and this is what I want, I need fans that like that particular sound.

Kostas :: Say something to your Greek Fans! 😊
Antonio :: If you’ve read until now I think that you are now curious to hear my music so check out us on Bandcamp and I hope to surprise you with these particular melodies. Thank you all for the patience in reading this!
