Heavy Metal OTD meets Michele Montanari

Interview with the Keyboardist of Kayleth

Kayleth were born in Verona on 2005 with the target to create a stoner band inspired by Kyuss, Orange Goblin, 7zuma7 and Monster Magnet.

Kayleth is member of the UnderWorld Map

Kostas :: What type of band are you?
Michele :: Hi!
We are KAYLETH, stoner/space/psychedelic rock band based on Italy. So we are: Enrico “Wico”, vox - Massimo “Dalla”, guitar - Alessandro “Zanks”, bass - Daniele “Pedro”, drums - Michele “Mik”, synthesizers

Kostas :: Tell us the brief history of your band.
Michele :: During a cold and foggy night on 2005, Massimo and Enrico met to drink a couple of beers and they decided to start a stoner band, like ones they loved. Then they found other members and the trip started.

Kostas :: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Michele :: We have very different musical background, Pedro comes from metal, Zanks from Punk, Max from psychedelic and so on, so they have a particular impact on our music. Then we love videogames, manga, sci-fi movies, TV series and… craft beers!

Kostas :: What are your dreams and goals?
Michele :: Wow, this is easy: we want to play abroad, in particular US and Japan but also Australia and many other countries! And of course play at Desert Fest, to share stage with our idols and live a dream. Then we can die happy!

Kostas :: Who writes the songs, what are they about?
Michele :: All songs start with jam during rehearsal sessions, then Wico sings over music following the mood. If we like the previous jam, we play again it and we finish the song in few sessions. Inspiration is the key.

Kostas :: How do you promote your band and shows?
Michele :: Social media are the best way now, you can reach a lot of people in few clicks. But we still love websites, blogs and radios managed by people who loves music and support bands, many times for free, just for passion. We do the same for shows, even if we still use text messages and flyers. Yes, we are vintage people ;)

Kostas :: Describe your show, visual and musically.
Michele :: We use our own laser and led lights to create a space atmosphere, sometimes we play psychedelic videoclips because visual is an important part of our shows. Musically, we follow a songs list with a progression, so people can dive completely and enjoy the trip.

Kostas :: What do you think about downloading music online?
Michele :: We use it a lot, because it works for our album, just this. We prefers vinyls and cds for quality but we should offer what also people prefer. Digital music breaks the borders and it is good if is used well.

Kostas :: What's your outlook on the record industry today?
Michele :: Wow, good question dude! Personally, we have a good opinion about labels because we work very well with Argonauta Records and Ripple Music, so this is our direct experience. Our suggestion for bands which are looking for a label, promotion agency or so on, please collaborate with professionists! Then you can have a true opinion.

Kostas :: What's your claim to fame?
Michele :: We play together for 13 years and we work hard to write good music and play shows. We have been included in some important compilations, we had excellent reviews and we shared the stage with big bands. Not a claim to fame, but many.

Kostas :: Tell us a story about a day in your life.
Michele :: : A day in our life is family, music, job, music, friends, music, beer, music, motorcycle/van, music, movies, family.Stop and start again.

Kostas :: What inspires you to do what you do?
Michele :: The Audience and our fans give us necessary energy to do what we do every day. It is hard to drive for many kilometers, prepare the show and play but when someone congratulates with us or ask details about our songs, this is our best reward.

Kostas :: What advice would you give to fellow bands?
Michele :: There are many good bands and we are friends with many of them. We have a lot of fun when we play together at festivals or venues and this is the proof that we should join forces to create a stronger music underground.

Kostas :: How does music affect you and the world around you?
Michele :: We love music, we listen to music everyday as much as we can. Of course live shows are best place to meet friends and enjoy music. We go to big ones like QOTSA, Metallica, Depeche Mode, etc. but we love smaller gigs with local and foreign bands so we

Kostas :: What's new in the recording of your music?
Michele :: We prefer vintage style, in fact our last album “Colossus” has been recorded with few overdubs and using tapes to have warm analog sound. The result is very good and we are very satisfied! Probably we will do the same for next album, maybe a concept one.

Kostas :: What are the biggest obstacles for bands?
Michele :: Themselves. Really, we agree that there are many obstacles for bands like few venues to play, sell albums and so on but if bands believe in themselves, work hard and collaborate with professionists, the obstacles could be broken.

Kostas :: What's the best and worst thing about playing clubs?
Michele :: Of course best thing is play for audience, meet other bands and people who work and support music, manytime for free as passion. The worst thing is when people think that you are a musician, booking manager, event promoter, audio technician, you not drink for six-seven hours and you just need a sandwich after 300 kilometers by van and evening show!

Kostas :: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
Michele :: We have some incoming shows but the most important is the Rural Stoner Fest, located in the countryside where you can do camping and enjoy two days of pure music and nature. Don’t miss this, we offer special code so you can have real discount on tickets!
